Body of lies
Aisha in the movie, but Alice Melville in the book
Roger Ferris' grandfather background info is relevant in the book (Fares)
Gretchen Ferris seems superfluous in the book. Carice van Houten actually played the character of Roger's wife Gretchen Ferris, but all her scenes were deleted and she does not appear in the final cut.
Hani makes a video of Suleiman which Ferris delivers to Al Jazeera. Not sure why Ferris had to deliver it personally?

Credit Scores
credit utilization
30% of your FICO score is based on "credit utilization," a broad term that includes how much you've used of each credit limit, how much you've borrowed as a percentage of your total available credit and even how big the dollar balances actually are.
Cut back your credit-card use for two or three months before you plan to seek a car loan or mortgage so that your balances will be more modest.
on time
35% of the total, is whether you have paid your bills on time. One late payment will ding your score for up to a year, very late payments can hurt you for two or three years, and collections and bankruptcies can sting for up to seven years.
credit history
closed accounts in good standing will stay on your record for a decade, says Barry Paperno, FICO consumer-operations manager. Both old and closed accounts can help your score because the length of your credit history is another, if smaller, piece of the formula.
Preserving your credit history is one reason that Kenneth Lin, CEO of Creditkarma.com, recommends that you don't formally close an account but let the issuer close it for lack of activity. The longer the account stays open, he says, the more you'll add to your credit history and the longer you'll benefit from the additional available credit.
hard inquiry
ask up front if a bank, insurer or car dealer plans to check your credit record. Luckily, shopping around for a car or education loan or mortgage counts only as one inquiry as long as you do it within a few weeks. Otherwise, multiple inquiries may knock your score back for a year.
750
every 20 points in your score can mean a slightly lower mortgage rate or better car loan, but only up to the mid-700s.

Elder care
What advice do you have for people who are stuck in the middle?
Step back and look at what you are doing for yourself as well as for your parents. If you are helping them and worrying about your children at the same time, there's a good chance all you will really be is angry. We want to honor our parents, but we have to be comfortable with the choices they've made. If they didn't save for retirement, they shouldn't expect you to bail them out. Don't get into the victim-rescuer mode.

Rich Bernstein
2. Most stock market indicators have never actually been tested. Most don’t work.
3. Most investors’ time horizons are much too short. Statistics indicate that daytrading is largely based on luck.
4. Bull markets are made of risk aversion and undervalued assets. They are not made of cheering and a rush to buy.
5. Diversification doesn’t depend on the number of asset classes in a portfolio.Rather, it depends on the correlations between the asset classes in a portfolio.
6. Balance sheets are generally more important than are income or cashflow statements..
7. Investors should focus strongly on GAAP accounting, and should pay little attention to “pro forma” or “unaudited” financial statements.
8. Investors should be providers of scarce capital. Return on capital is typically highest where capital is scarce.
9. Investors should research financial history as much as possible.
10. Leverage gives the illusion of wealth. Saving is wealth.

not AMAZON
http://www.gazelle.com/
I read about these two sites from US News magazine. We sent a phone to cellforcash, they confirmed that they received it but they haven't sent us a check. We complained to the FTC but it's not likely anything will happen. In my follow up research, I saw that Wall Street Journal had also written favorable articles on this site. It's unfortunate that reputable publications give favorable publicity to suspect sites.
Gazelle - we have not tried, so don't know how reputable they are. At this point, I'm suspicious of anything not named AMAZON.

email from my equity salesperson at a firm that no longer exists.
"Three very important things have happened in 3 days: Two major financial players get an equity infusion (Citi and Freddie Mac); and a high profile low quality ABS portfolio gets transfered at a real market price, in this case a $3b ABS portfolio sells for $800m at ETFC. These are the events that mark a bottom.."
Milk for cereal should be purchased directly by employees.
In our continued efforts to reduce spend in this difficult economic environment, BNP Paribas has decided to reduce supplies available in the pantries in NJ and NY. We will no longer be replenishing bowls, plates, utensils, straws, etc and will be reducing the amount of milk available in the refrigerators. By reducing these products, we will save the bank more than $100,000 per year.
Please be advised that the milk in the pantries is intended for use with coffee only. Milk for cereal should be purchased directly by employees.

Cruise
from WSJ
CruiseCritic.com offers reviews boat-by-boat and port-by-port, evaluating cruise lines and itineraries and offering recommendations for cruises suited for families or couples or adventurers or mature adults. It has a fairly large database of cruise reviews from travelers, and you can pick up a lot of tips, especially if you aren't an experienced cruiser.
ShoreTrips.com offers links and reviews of shore trips offered by local firms, sometimes a better value than the shore excursions offered by cruise lines. Prices can be cheaper, and the trips may be longer than what the companies linked to the cruise-line offers.
And before you buy a cruise, it's worthwhile to check the sanitary record of the ship you are considering at , the Web site of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which posts inspection scores under its Vessel Sanitation Program. On the current "green sheet" of inspection scores, six ships out of 153 failed to achieve acceptable scores: Amadea, Celebrity Infinity, MV Clipper Pacific, Nautilus Explorer, Pride of Aloha and Stad Amsterdam.
